Frequently Asked Questions

What is Soundworks all about?

Soundworks was founded in 2001 as the University of Pennsylvania's only strictly tap dancing group. Our dances are fully student choreographed in a variety of styles influenced by our members, from rhythm tap to Broadway-style tap, hip-hop, jazz, and more!

How often does Soundworks perform?

We have one solo performance each semester in addition to participating in university and community events throughout the year.

What is the time commitment like?

One advantage of joining Soundworks is the extremely flexible schedule! All members are expected to attend one weekly 90 minute full company rehearsal. Aside from that, members can choose how many pieces to be in each semester. Each piece is an additional one hour weekly rehearsal.

What is the community like?

We call it the STFamily for a reason! From post-show hangouts to presentation nights we have frequent social events, and some of our members have met their best friends through Soundworks.

Do I need tap experience to join?

Tap experience is definitely not required! While we recommend having some tap and/or dance background, we encourage anyone interested to come to our auditions.

How can I audition?

Soundworks holds open auditions at the start of each semester. Learn more about our audition process here and follow our Instagram @soundworkstapfactory for updates!
